About the Artist

Roxanne Brown headshot.jpg

A daily dose of fabric, threads, and yarn is nearly as essential to me as breathing. For as long as I can remember, I have sought out the tactile satisfaction of creating with fibers. I am mostly self-taught, but completed a 2-year fiber program at the Worcester Center for Crafts (Worcester, MA) in the early 1990’s. Upon graduation, I received the annual David Morreale memorial award for outstanding achievement. I returned to full-time attention to my art in mid-2021.

My present work is an amalgamation of different fiber techniques—machine stitching with varieties of sewing threads; quilting; applique; and adding detail with fabric inks and paints. The natural world is my constant inspiration, and what always catches my eye is texture and close-up beauty, like spotting a first delicate wildflower in early Spring, or the vein patterns of richly colored Fall leaves illuminated by late afternoon sun. I am constantly thinking of how to depict the textures and colors and majestic emotions of the natural world with fiber as my medium.

My starting point is most often one of my own photographs that I have enlarged and perhaps digitally manipulated to better understand the light, shadows, and details of the subject matter. On another day, my starting point may be an intriguing fabric, a batik in particular, that evokes a certain mood. This then becomes the backdrop for my stitched imagery. Each piece develops in its own way and, like nature, is never entirely predictable.
